Intro to Film Photography 101

Our intro to Film Photography 101 class is all about teaching you the art of film photography.

Film photography has different characteristics than digital does and this hands on workshop is designed to teach you the skills necessary to branch out with your photography.

This 4 hour class will cover the following:

  • How film works

  • Discussion of Camera Obscura and what it means

  • Difference between cameras such as SLR’s, Rangefinders, Point and Shoots

  • Discussion of various formats of film: 35mm, 120 (medium format), and large format

  • How to load a 35mm camera and how to retrieve the film and what to do with it

  • How to properly meter for black and white or color film

  • Discussion of the Sunny 16 principle

  • How to use and read the in camera meter or an external light meter

  • And more!

Each class comes with a free roll of film, either black and white or color. After the class, you are encouraged to go out and shoot your roll of film, then drop is back off to Safelight Labs where we will develop, process, and scan it for you.

This class will be held here at Safelight Labs in a classroom style setting.
